Carrick Barbarians bring local schools together

Carrickfergus Rugby Football Club hosted the ‘Carrick Barbarians’ U13 and U15 teams as they competed against Ardrossan RFC, a Scottish touring side. The matches took place on Friday 9 April, as part of the Club’s CRFC Rugby Outreach Programme (CROP).

The CROP Programme is part financed by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the CAN Peace III Partnership.

The ‘Carrick Barbarians’ teams consisted of players from Carrick College, Downshire High School, Ulidia Integrated College, Glengormley High School, Monkstown Community School and Belfast Boys Model. Invitations had been extended to the schools who then nominated players to take part. It was a great opportunity for pupils from different schools in the area to mix together whilst also getting the chance to play against a side from across the water.

After the matches, the teams gathered in the club house for refreshments and agreed the event had been a great success. The two clubs exchanged plaques and Ardcrossan extended an invitation to their new friends to a return fixture in Scotland next year.
