Carrickfergus Rugby Football Club signs up to the One Small Step campaign
Carrickfergus Rugby Football Club has signed up to the One Small Step campaign in support of the club’s recently launched Rugby Outreach Programme (CROP). Through this project the club aims to increase the level and diversity of access to the sport in a safe and secure environment.
CROP is part of the Play Fair Programme and is part financed by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the CAN Peace III Partnership.
The One Small Step campaign, which was founded by senior figures from across Northern Ireland has Trevor Ringland, a former Ulster and Ireland winger as Chair. Making 31 competitive appearances for Ireland, he played in the 1987 Rugby World Cup and toured New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions.
Mr Ringland commended the club and stated,
“This is an example of the sort of leadership that our society needs in order to grasp this opportunity to move us to a peaceful and stable shared future, which brings out the best in our people, in our beautiful country.”
Speaking on behalf of the Club, CRFC President Gerry Simms added,
“The club is delighted to be involved with the One Small Step campaign. CRFC has long recognised that the best values of sport can help young people to build values and skill sets that will help to act positively to break down barriers.
By affiliating to the One Small Step campaign we are demonstrating that we are prepared to support and become actively involved in seeking to increase understanding and respect between communities.”
The CROP project will see the appointment of a Community Rugby Officer (CRO) who will work closely with the local schools and community. Both cross community and cross border activities are planned. A series of a ‘A Game of Three Halves’ are in the planning stage for the summer months. The club will also be hosting workshops, seminars and training sessions along sports and diversity themes as part of its Community Education Programme within CROP.
